PIE to Bimini for the weekend

Monday, February 20th, 2006

Bimini BahamasThis last weekend I took 7100Q down for a visit to Bimini. The plan was wheels up at 6am but with all the packing and unloading and waiting for passengers it was 6:45 before we got off. The weather looked good all the way to Bimini. I flew with 3 freinds from work and we flew straight out from PIE through SPG airspace direct to Boca Raton and then headed out over to Bimini. I filed the International VFR flight plan from PIE and opened it in the air with St. Pete FSS.

Trip to Manatee

Thursday, February 16th, 2006

A freind of mine from Michigan was in town on business this wManatee Adventurerseek and since neither of us had much in the way of Valentines options, both of us being from out of town we decided to fly down to Manatee 48X for some dinner with another freind. Perfect weather was in effect and so off we went. Another freind and his wife from St Petersburg came with us with his wife who had never been in a small plane. We flew out to Clearwater then down along the coast to the Skyway Bridge and over to Manatee. It is uncontrolled so we called into 122.90 and landed on runway 07. It is a grass strip but this time of year it is very firm and comfortable landing spot. They have runway lights but they don’t appear to be pilot activated. They come on when the sun sets and stay on as far as I can tell all night. The airfield has mostly experimental and ultralight aircraft but makes a good walk around. The air was silky smooth the whole flight and when we landed we spoke to some ultralight pilots and they complained at how bumpy it was. Our freind picked us up and we drove to Ellington and stopped at a really nice little resturant on the Manatee river called Woodies. The food was good and the setting fantastic. They had a really nice log fireplace and heaters all over. Since it is right on the river they have a lot of boat traffic especially on weekends. It is definitely a worthwhile trip and a short hop accross the bay. The very scenic trip only took an hour of flight time..
